Hope Powell, the women’s British football instructor has driven her side into glory, with the British players defeating New Zealand in what was called a historic game. It became Steph Houghton’s free kick which provided the team the one -nil victory in the Olympic’s Millennium Stadium versus the Football Fearns, and presented an outstanding first event in the Games.

Powell says that the women on the squad ‘made history today’ and proceeded to say they had been seeking a confident performance, which is precisely what they got. Powell also praised Steph, remarking that it required outstanding courage to score a goal that way under these kinds of pressurised conditions, and that it was a ‘fantastic strike’.
