British Women’s football team see victory at the opening of the Games, states Travelup

Hope Powell, the women’s British football instructor has driven her side into glory, with the British players defeating New Zealand in what was called a historic game. It became Steph Houghton’s free kick which provided the team the one -nil victory in the Olympic’s Millennium Stadium versus the Football Fearns, and presented an outstanding first event in the Games.

Powell says that the women on the squad ‘made history today’ and proceeded to say they had been seeking a confident performance, which is precisely what they got. Powell also praised Steph, remarking that it required outstanding courage to score a goal that way under these kinds of pressurised conditions, and that it was a ‘fantastic strike’.

Travelup declared that the team played in extremely high temperatures, as the United Kingdom experienced one of its hottest times to date, and initially looked very nervous through the opening minutes of the match. However after a few what were called ‘excellent chances’ by Powell, the team were triumphant over their opponents.

Powell commented that it was an amazingly hard competition, taking into consideration the temperatures of the day, and described the match as a ‘battle’. Even though the coach declared that she wanted the squad members to delight in the significant experience, she also said that she had emphasised that this was their chance to show their skills on the pitch. She included that it did take some time in the match for the team members to find their feet, but that she was very pleased with how well the game went overall.

Although there was much scepticism around the very idea of including a British football team in the Games football tournament, the women’s team were readily backed by an audience of over 25,000 individuals as they played the match in the Cardiff Millennium Stadium. As outlined by Travelup reviews, the atmosphere was electric as the team members stepped onto to the pitch.

Powell was very quick to acknowledge that the triumph in the game was substantially the result of the performance of Houghton, for whom this game was her very first appearance in a big tournament situation. The full back from Arsenal has a total of 27 England Caps, but was injured before she could play in both the World Cup of 2007, and the Euro 2009 games.

Even so, her self-confidence was certainly not missing as she made her free kick during the first half of the game versus the New Zealand team. Reported by other team members, Houghton was ‘in shock’ at having scored the goal, but everyone is reported to be very pleased for her. She has, as stated by Powell, ‘made history’, despite the fact that her prior efforts at taking part in major tournaments have been dogged by injury.
